We’ve been conducting subject-specific briefings throughout January to share what it takes to excel at this level.

English: Tackling Complexity at Upper Secondary

Upper Secondary English demands critical thinking and structured responses — surface-level answers no longer cut it.

Writing: Students face more complex text types including argumentative essays and hybrid formats. Planning before writing is essential — state your central argument clearly, support with evidence, and ensure logical flow between paragraphs.

Comprehension: Passages test the ability to critically process figurative language and implied meaning. Go beyond surface comprehension to analyse literary devices and their effects.

Summary Writing: This component requires higher-order thinking — mentally distinguish between descriptions, examples, reasons, and effects to extract only what’s needed. Many lose marks by including unnecessary details.

Fluency development: Pay attention to marked work, build vocabulary daily, and read widely. There are no shortcuts to language mastery — consistent effort yields results.

Maths & A-Maths: Building Strong Foundations for Success

O-Level and IP Year 4 Maths covers all topics from Sec 1 onwards — weak foundations in earlier years can significantly impact performance.

Strengthen Sec 1-2 foundations. Chapters like Percentages, Number Patterns, Algebraic Identities, and Volume/Surface Area are prerequisites for Sec 3-4 topics. Use school holidays to revise and fill gaps before they compound.

Master Problems in Real-World Contexts (PRWC). The final Paper 2 question is a 10-11 mark PRWC question requiring a decision. Scoring well requires reading context thoroughly, making reasonable assumptions, and showing clear working — method marks are still awarded even if the final decision is incorrect.

Practice P.A.U. (Presentation, Accuracy, Units). Many marks are lost to poor presentation (messy layout, incorrect equals signs), wrong accuracy (3 s.f. for non-exact answers, 1 d.p. for angles), and missing units. These are avoidable with careful practice.

Don’t underestimate timed practice. Completing at least 5 full exam papers under timed conditions builds stamina and reduces mental blocks during actual exams.

Pure & Combined Science: Understanding Over Memorisation

The Upper Secondary Science syllabus emphasises understanding and application over factual recall. Whether you’re taking Pure Chemistry, Pure Physics, or Combined Science, the key is applying concepts to novel situations — not just memorising content.

Chemistry — Know the new syllabus content. From 2024, new content include the mole concept (Avogadro constant), biofuels, plastic recycling methods, carbon cycle, and greenhouse gases. Periodic Table group numbers have also changed (e.g., Group VII is now Group 17). Build strong Sec 3 foundations (moles, acid reactions) as they’re prerequisites for Sec 4 topics like speed of reaction and electrolysis.

Physics — Connect concepts to problem-solving. Many students understand concepts but struggle to apply them. Identify weak topics early using past test results, and address gaps before they compound. Use precise scientific language — keywords matter for marks. Create your own concept maps to organise and link content across topics.

Combined Science — Balance both subjects. Managing two subjects in one grade can be challenging, especially when you’re stronger in one than the other. Focus extra effort on the weaker subject, and remember that practical papers require skills in both. The good news: Combined Science topics are a subset of Pure Science, so the depth required is more manageable.

For all Science subjects: Use progressive practice — start with Topical TYS, then Yearly TYS, then School Prelim Papers. For structured questions, identify the topic and concept based on clues in the question, plan answers based on marks allocated, and avoid general or incomplete explanations.

Chinese: Systematic Techniques for Every Component

O-Level Chinese has three papers — Writing (30%), Language Comprehension (35%), and Oral & Listening (35%).

Composition: For narrative essays, use topic analysis to identify keywords, related parties, and content restrictions. Techniques like flashback, suspense, and contrast make compositions more engaging. For argumentative essays, follow a clear structure (Introduction 5%, Body 90%, Conclusion 5%) with 3 supporting reasons and examples.

Comprehension: The new Vocabulary Replacement section requires replacing one character in underlined words. For open-ended questions, combine the author’s viewpoint with your own explanation — don’t just copy from the passage without modification.

Oral: Practise reading aloud daily for pronunciation and intonation. For the conversation component, prepare responses on common topics (traditional culture, social issues, daily life) and practise expressing opinions clearly.

For Higher Chinese students: Additional challenges include 病句改正 (sentence correction), 片段缩写 (passage summarization), and 演讲词 (speech) composition. The oral has both 口头报告 (oral report) and 讨论 (discussion) components.

Secondary English: What It Takes to Score

Literature questions appear in Comprehension. The focus is on “how something is written” — literary techniques and their effects. Narrative Comprehension questions are often Literature questions in disguise, so students need to analyse beyond surface meaning.

Oral requires structured thinking under pressure. The “Stand and Deliver” format gives students 2 minutes to generate ideas, organise them, and present confidently. This tests the ability to think on your feet, not just conversational fluency.

Writing has specific requirements. Essays, Situational Writing, and Summary Writing each require different approaches — understand audience, purpose, and structure for each type.

Common pitfalls to avoid:

Assuming “you cannot study for English” — language skills improve with deliberate practice
Not reading enough — this limits vocabulary and comprehension ability
Neglecting grammar and vocabulary — these are essential enablers for all language skills

Secondary Maths: Building Strong Algebraic Foundations

Algebra underpins everything. From equations to geometry proofs, algebraic fluency is essential. Students who haven’t fully grasped earlier algebraic concepts will struggle with more advanced topics in Sec 2 and beyond.

Prepare for real-world context questions. At O-Level, Problems in Real-World Contexts (PRWC) appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. These questions require interpreting everyday situations (travel plans, household finances, data from graphs) and applying mathematical reasoning — not just computation.

Focus on presentation and accuracy. Common mistakes that cost marks:

Poor time management (spending too long on difficult questions)
Careless errors from unclear working
Forgetting units or mixing up degrees with numerical values
Not following accuracy rules (3 s.f. for non-exact answers, 1 d.p. for angles)

Why Maths matters for streaming: Results determine eligibility for Additional Mathematics in Upper Sec — a prerequisite for many JC and Poly courses.

Secondary Science: The Bridge to Upper Sec

Lower Secondary Science covers 16 chapters across Chemistry, Physics, and Biology — and ALL of these topics reappear in the Upper Sec syllabus. Strong foundations now give students a genuine head start.

Understand, don’t just memorise. Students who simply memorise facts struggle to apply concepts in new situations — exactly what exam questions test.

Master answering techniques for open-ended questions. Common weaknesses include:

Not understanding command words (State, Describe, Explain, Suggest)
Using vague language instead of scientific terms
Missing keywords in answers
Inability to apply concepts to real-life situations

Why Science matters for streaming:

Triple Science (8 subjects): Top 15% overall, at least 75% for Maths & Science
2 Pure Sciences: Top 40% overall, at least 70% for Maths & Science
Combined Science: For students who don’t meet Pure Science criteria

Pure Science has more content and requires deeper understanding — streaming results determine which path is available.

Secondary Chinese: Formats and Techniques That Matter

Practical Writing (实用文) requires learning the correct format:

Sec 1: Personal Email (私人电邮)
Sec 2: Personal Email, Official Email (公务电邮), and Forum Reply (论坛回复) for HCL

Format errors lose marks even if content is good. Always create an outline before writing.

Composition expectations by level:

Sec 1: 250+ characters (CL) / 400+ characters (HCL) — narrative about events or people
Sec 2: 300+ characters (CL) / 500+ characters (HCL) — situational narrative or argumentative essay

Oral preparation:

PSLE English: What It Takes to Score

Many students write lengthy compositions but don’t score well — because idea development and structure matter more than word count.

Writing: The rubric rewards relevance, clear idea development, and controlled grammar — not length alone or flowery vocabulary without control. Students who plan before writing tend to score higher than those who simply write more.

Comprehension: Students often lose marks by giving vague or overly long answers. The key is precision — using the A.L.P. method helps: Analyse keywords in the question, Look for evidence in the text, then Phrase answers that directly address what’s being asked.

Oral: Many students have ideas but struggle to express them clearly under pressure.

For Reading Aloud, the R.E.A.P. framework covers what matters: Rhythm, Expression, Articulation, Pace.
For Stimulus-Based Conversation, P.E.E.R.S. guides well-structured responses: state your Point, Explain through examples, share your Experience, Recommend a solution, and Summarise.

PSLE Maths: Tackling Problem Sums with Power Codes

PSLE Maths increasingly tests reasoning and application — students need to show their method of solution, not just the answer.

Use structured problem-solving strategies. We teach Power Codes — step-by-step frameworks that help students identify question types and apply the right method. Instead of trial and error, students learn to recognise patterns and solve systematically. This builds confidence especially for multi-concept and non-routine questions.

Show clear working for Paper 2. Even a correct answer with no working may not get full marks. Practise writing solutions in a structured, step-by-step format.

Don’t underestimate P4-P6 topic revision. PSLE questions often combine multiple concepts and skills — a single problem sum may require students to apply knowledge from different topics learned across P4 to P6.

Build number sense and checking habits. Top scorers verify their answers by working backwards and estimating whether their answer is reasonable.

PSLE Science: Scoring on MCQ & Open-Ended Questions

At this level, Science questions require students to apply concepts — not just recall facts.

For MCQs: Eliminate systematically. Don’t just pick the first option that looks right – go through all options, eliminate the clearly wrong ones, and verify the remaining answer against the question.

For open-ended questions: Analyse the question, then structure your answer. Many students lose marks because their answers are vague or missing key terms.

C.C.C. (Question Analysis): Before answering, identify the Command word (State, Describe, Explain, Suggest), the Concept being tested, and the Context of the question. This ensures students understand what depth of answer is required.
A.I.R. (Answering): Structure responses with a clear Answer, support it with Information from the question or prior knowledge, then explain the Reasoning that connects them.
Use correct scientific terminology (e.g., “photosynthesis”, “evaporation”, not “the plant makes food” or “water disappears”) and match answer depth to marks allocated.

Don’t neglect P3/P4 foundations. About 30% of PSLE Science draws from earlier topics.

Manage time carefully. With 1 hour 45 minutes for the whole paper, aim for ~45 minutes on MCQs (including checking and shading) and ~1 hour on structured questions.

PSLE Chinese: Systematic Techniques for Every Component

Chinese has four major components — Vocabulary (20%), Comprehension (21%), Composition (20%), and Oral (25%).

Comprehension: Use the three-step method (三步答题法) — Find keywords from the question in the passage, Underline relevant sentences, Modify text into your answer. Many students copy directly without modification and lose marks.

Composition: Students who use STAR method (Speak, Think, Action, Reaction) write more engaging compositions with richer character development — exactly what the marking rubric rewards.

Oral: Structure video descriptions with 4W — When, Where, Who, What. For follow-up questions, prepare responses on common topics (reading habits, healthy eating, internet use) and practise giving school-related suggestions.

English: Strong Foundations Start with Reading and Vocabulary

Many students struggle with English because they haven’t built a strong enough foundation in vocabulary and grammar.

Reading regularly matters. Students who read widely develop better vocabulary, comprehension skills, and an intuitive sense of grammar. Encourage your child to read age-appropriate books and magazines — and make it a daily habit, not just before exams.

Vocabulary needs active practice. It’s not enough to encounter new words — students need to learn to spell them and use them correctly. Learning a few new words each day, with their meanings and usage, builds a strong foundation over time.

Grammar is the backbone of good writing. At the P3 and P4 level, students are still reinforcing essential grammar rules. Regular practice with corrections helps reinforce these skills.

At the P3 and P4 level, students tackle more complex concepts and challenging problem sums that require structured problem-solving approaches.

Certain P3-P4 topics won’t be revisited later. Topics like length and mass, factors and multiples, nets, bar graphs, and long division are taught at this level and assumed mastered by P5. Building strong foundations now prevents gaps later.

Master the model method early. The model method is one of the most frequently used problem-solving heuristics throughout primary school. Students who understand the concept of “1 unit” and how to use before-after models will find it easier to tackle more complex problems later.

Use structured frameworks for word problems. Step-by-step approaches (Power Codes) — such as the “Before-Change-After” method for problems involving transfers between people — help students identify question types and solve them systematically, rather than relying on trial and error.

Science: Understanding Beats Memorisation

P3-P4 Science forms the foundation for PSLE. About 30% of PSLE Science questions draw from P3 and P4 topics. Building strong understanding now makes Upper Primary Science much more manageable.

Understanding beats memorisation. Encourage your child to ask “why” and “how” — not just “what”. When learning about magnets, for example, explore why magnets attract certain metals but not others. When studying life cycles, observe real plants or insects together.

Learn to analyse questions carefully. Many students lose marks because they don’t identify what the question is really asking. Teach your child to look for command words (state, describe, explain, suggest) — each requires a different type of answer. For open-ended questions, structuring responses with a clear Answer, supporting Information, and logical Reasoning (AIR) helps students score full marks.

Use correct scientific terminology. Using precise keywords like “photosynthesis” instead of “the plant makes food” helps students communicate clearly and score marks for open-ended questions.

Start with books your child enjoys — picture books, early readers, comics — and make reading a daily habit. At this stage, it’s about building the love for reading, not just the skill.

Spelling and vocabulary grow through practice. Focus on sight words and high-frequency vocabulary. Learning a few new words each day, with their meanings and usage, builds a strong foundation over time.

Concrete learning comes first. The CPA (Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract) approach means students should work with physical objects before pictures, and pictures before numbers. Let your child count real objects, use manipulatives, and see maths in everyday situations.

Word problems start early. Even at P1 and P2, students encounter simple word problems. The key challenge is often reading and understanding what the question asks. Model drawing (bar models) is introduced early to help students visualise problems — this becomes essential for problem sums later.

Connect maths to daily life. Shopping, cooking, telling time, measuring ingredients — everyday activities reinforce mathematical thinking. Ask your child to help count items, compare quantities, and recognise patterns around them.

Chinese: Master Hanyu Pinyin Early

Chinese at the P1 and P2 level focuses on building a strong foundation in the language — mastering Hanyu Pinyin, learning basic strokes and radicals, and developing all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Hanyu Pinyin is crucial. P1 students spend significant time learning Hanyu Pinyin (汉语拼音) — the phonetic system for reading Chinese characters correctly. Note that Pinyin looks similar to English letters but sounds different (e.g., “c” is pronounced “ts”). Help your child distinguish between Pinyin and English pronunciation.

Know the two types of characters. Students learn 识读字 (recognition characters) — which they only need to read — and 识写字 (writing characters) — which they must be able to write correctly. Focus practice on the writing characters, which are typically fewer but require more attention.

Supervise weekly spelling and reading aloud. Consistent practice at home is essential. Use the spelling revision sheets (听写复习单) and reading aloud sheets (朗读单) provided each week. Regular practice prevents gaps from building up.

Make Chinese part of daily life. Encourage your child to speak Chinese at home, watch Chinese programmes, and read Chinese picture books together. Creating an environment where Chinese is used naturally helps build confidence and fluency.

How Lucas Balanced Leadership, School Life and 7 A1s

I joined Mind Stretcher when I was still a little kid. Over the years, I was supported by teachers who truly understood how I learned. One of my English teachers, Ms Mavis, taught me for five years, from Primary 6 all the way to O-Levels.

Starting classes at the beginning of the school year really made a difference for me. Learning topics earlier at Mind Stretcher gave me more time to understand them before they were taught in school. When I struggled with Chemistry in Sec 3, this helped a lot. My Mind Stretcher teachers would introduce the topic first, and when I learnt it again in school later, I could follow along more confidently and absorb the content at my own pace.

The Mid-Year and End-of-Year Checkpoints also helped me stay aware of my progress. Whenever I needed clarification, I knew I could approach my Mind Stretcher teachers, even with questions from my school papers.

Hey there, we’re sharing our P6 students’ achievements from this year’s PSLE. We’re so proud of every one of you!

Celebrating 2025 PSLE Achievements

At the start of the year, our P6 students were stepping into one of their biggest milestones yet, PSLE. Alongside them were many first-time parents, navigating the nerves that come with a first national examination ✨

We invested heavily in our P6 students because we knew how much this year mattered. Our curriculum team designed extra revision materials shared in our Telegram groups, developed digital tools to support areas students struggled with most and conducted super sessions right up to the day before PSLE.

Looking back on this journey, we are deeply heartened. 2 in 3 of our students achieved AL1 or AL2 in their Mind Stretcher subjects. Beyond the results, this reflects hardwork and the collective effort between students, teachers and parents. P6s, we’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished and so grateful to have been part of your journey!

🚀 What’s Happening In Our Classes

Our lower primary students are fully enjoying Discovery Zone activities, a fun segment within their 2 hour classes. For our Chinese lessons, they practised giving short speeches in front of their classmates, an activity that builds confidence and nurtures oral skills. They are also revising words from the previous lesson through spelling (听写) and learning new textbook vocabulary (课本词语) for the first topic of the new year.

For our P6 students, this week’s focus is on English Comprehension and Composition. They are using the ALP answering technique to tackle different comprehension question types and learning from an A* model composition on the theme of leadership, supported by a Mind Stretching Vocabulary list they can apply across similar composition themes.

National Youth Orator Championships 2025 (NYOC) Finals

Last Saturday, Master Speakers held the NYOC Finals with more than 40 finalists across all categories. Parents, friends and teachers filled the room with encouragement as the speakers spoke about topics related to Singapore, from their hopes for the nation in 10 years to what they believe is Singapore’s best trait.

It was heartwarming to see how much each finalist has improved over the past few months, from coaching week to the semi-finals and finals. We are so glad to be part of their public speaking journey. We’ll be organising more events, showcases and platforms to give students opportunities to speak and gain exposure - stay tuned!

Full 5-Day Edventure Camp now at $850 | Activities include Science Workshops & Showcases

With your feedback, we’ve brought the camp price down - the full 5-day programme is now $850 (limited slots only).

If you haven’t made plans for the year-end holidays yet, our Science Workshop (part of the 5-day Edventure Camp) might be something your child will really enjoy. It’s a full hands-on day where they get to explore and experiment with science, instead of just reading about it in a textbook.

Lower Primary (7-9 years old): They’ll explore light and shadow by creating their own Wayang Kulit puppets and experiment with forces and motion through a paper aeroplane challenge.
Upper Primary (10-12 years old): They’ll put structures and load-bearing design to the test by building bridges and uncover the science behind magnets through a fun “magic trick” challenge.

Students will also design their own experiments and develop problem statements, applying their new science and engineering skills. On the last day of the camp, they will present their projects at the Edventure Science Fair 2025 to peers, teachers and parents. We’ve reduced the price even further, now just $850 for the full 5-day camp.
