Building Confident Communicators in Our English Classes
Speaking confidently is an essential lifeskill. In our Discovery Zone English lessons, students craft speeches about superheroes and present them, boosting their public speaking confidence.
Our Primary 3 students took centre stage in our Discovery Zone Speak Out! segment — part of our Lower Primary English core programme that focuses on boosting their public speaking confidence (read more about our engaging Discovery Zone segments across all subjects).
The theme for this activity? Superpowers.
Their mission? To convince their peers and teachers that their unique superpower is the most exciting, powerful or helpful.
Superpower Showdown in Action
Here’s a peek into two students’ speeches, filled with expressive hand gestures and persuasive language. Their superpowers? Rainbow Blast and Animal Whisperer.
My name is Rainbow Pizza. I have the power to shoot powerful beams that spread happiness. I can turn frowns into smiles.
This superpower is useful because it can promote world peace and bring tranquillity to hearts and minds!
My name is Zodiac Animal Spark. I’m like Doctor Dolittle, who can talk to animals. I’ll be a great help to zookeepers and veterinarians.
I can help when animals are sick or behaving strangely. Being an animal whisperer is a privilege I’ll cherish, and I’ll use my powers to help banish animal abuse.
Try This At Home: Craft Your Own Superpower Speech
Here’s a fun way to continue building your child’s speaking confidence at home. Use our Spin-the-Wheel of Superpowers to decide the superpower you’re taking on. You can use the structure below to guide them in crafting their superpower speech:
My name is [Superhero Name], and I have the power of [Superpower]!"
"With this power, I can [explain how it works]."
"This power is useful because [explain why it’s great]."
"If I had to face a challenge, it would be [mention a weakness or funny downside]."
Encourage your child to use gestures, vary their tone and make eye contact as they speak. And more importantly, have fun!
Speaking confidently is an essential life skill. It supports our students as they progress to Upper Primary—especially during oral exams—and equips them for life beyond the classroom. These communication skills are useful not just in school, but in the real world too. Through Discovery Zone, which is part of our Lower Primary English core programme, we aim to nurture these very skills.
